Wigbert Fehse

Wigbert Fehse (born December 4, 1937 in Berlin ) is a German engineer and researcher in the field of navigation , path control and coupling in space travel .

life and work

Fehse studied mechanical engineering and flight control at the Technical University of Berlin , where he received his diploma in 1965 . In 1972 he was recognized for his studies on the combined hydrostatic storage chamber camp as frictionless bearing in navigational instruments at the Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Department of Transportation of the Technical University of Berlin award to Dr.-Ing. PhD . In addition, from 1965 to 1973 he worked in a leading position on the development of gyroscopes at Teldix (now Rockwell Collins, Inc.) in Heidelberg. In the following years he worked at ESTEC , the technical center of the European Space Agency in Noordwijk , Netherlands, with attitude control and precision alignment problems of various space projects and later became section head for the navigation and flight guidance of space vehicles. There he and his employees developed basic techniques and technologies for the automatic path control and docking of spacecraft (English: Automated rendezvous and docking of spacecraft), which are used in international space projects such as the former Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV). The first coupling of the ATV to the International Space Station ISS took place on April 3, 2008.

Since his retirement in 2002 he has worked as a consultant for European aerospace companies, particularly for issues of rendezvous and coupling with non-cooperative target satellite (eg space junk ) and geostationary satellites, repaired or need to be serviced. To do this, he investigated the influence of solar pressure on rendezvous orbits in geostationary orbit . Fehse also gives subject-related readings and courses at universities, international technical institutions and industrial companies.

Fehse received international recognition for his work in the field of automated rendezvous and docking / berthing of spacecraft . In addition to his numerous publications, his comprehensive manual entitled Automated Rendezvous and Docking of Spacecraft received worldwide attention. In 2011 an edition was published in Chinese.

He also wrote the section on "Close Proximity Rendezvous and Docking (RVD)" for the 2010 Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engineering, and - in 2013 - "Safety of Rendezvous and Docking Operations" for the manual "Safety Design for Space Operations".
