Opuntia streptacantha is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet streptacantha is derived from the Greek words στρεπτος (streptos) for "wound" and ἅκανθα (acantha) for "thorn". Spanish common names are "Cardón", "Cenizo", "Nopal Cardón", "Chaveño", "Nopal Cardón" and "Tuna Cardona".

Opuntia streptacantha grows shrubby to tree-like with heights between 2 and 4 meters. The distinctive trunk is up to 80 centimeters high with a diameter between 30 and 40 centimeters. The elongated to somewhat round, bare shoot sections are green, 18 to 30 centimeters long and 14 to 18 centimeters wide. The areoles have one or two long, sloping hairs and yellowish red glochids . The three to seven awl, whitish-gray and darkening thorns with age are 6 to 7 centimeters long.
The yellow to orange flowers are 6 to 7 inches long. The spherical to inverted egg-shaped fruits are 3 to 3.5 centimeters long and covered with short glochids.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Opuntia streptacantha is widespread in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Nuevo León , San Luis Potosí , Tamaulipas , Zacatecas , Querétaro , Hidalgo and Guanajuato at altitudes of 1,600 to 2,400 meters.
The first description was published in 1839 by Charles Lemaire .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
