Robert William von Stieglitz (born August 4, 1816 in Cookstown , Ireland , † March 18, 1876 in Kilkeel , Ireland) is considered one of the first pioneers in the colonization of Australia .

family

Robert William's father was Heinrich Ludwig von Stieglitz (1762–1824), son of Christian Ludwig Stieglitz (1724–1772) from Leipzig . Heinrich Ludwig (Henry Lewis) emigrated to Ireland in 1802 and married Charlotte Atkinson from the Crowhill family there in the same year. The couple had two daughters and six sons, including Robert William Stieglitz. In the period from 1829 to 1839 the siblings and the mother emigrated to Van Diemen's Land, later Tasmania , in 1833 Robert William.

Pioneer in Australia

In 1833 Robert William arrived in Tasmania. Like his brother John Lewis von Stieglitz , he no longer received any "Grant" land. Both became sheep farmers and from 1836 were among the first settlers in Port Phillip (now Victoria ). In 1837 Robert William founded the Ballan settlement (5000 acres) in the Geelong district . There was also land at Lake Hindmarsh in Wimmera (190,000 acres).

In 1852 gold was discovered on von Stieglitz's land around Ballan, whereupon a flourishing gold mining town emerged, which was called Steiglitz .

Robert William married Marcella Belcher (1828–1922) from Ireland in 1847. Four daughters were born. The daughters Florence and later Augusta were married to General Ludwig von Ompteda . The couple returned to Ireland in 1852.
