Ludwig Freiherr von Ompteda (* 10. January 1855 in Lueneburg , † 15. January 1915 in Challerange at Vouziers ) was a Prussian lieutenant general , last commander of the 42nd Reserve Infantry Brigade in the First World War .

Life

Ompteda was the son of a major and wing adjutant to Ernst August I. He saw his ancestor Christian Friedrich Wilhelm von Ompteda , who died in the battle of Waterloo , as a model.

On April 23, 1874 he was transferred as a second lieutenant to the 1st Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 31 in Altona . From 1876 he was adjutant of its 1st battalion before he was posted to the War Academy in Berlin from 1881 to 1884 . During that time he was promoted to Premier Lieutenant on December 13, 1883 , and married Florence von Stieglitz , a daughter of the Australian pioneer Robert William von Stieglitz with German-Irish roots. From 1886 to 1888 he was a regimental adjutant and was then assigned to the General Staff . During the promotion to captain he was appointed company commander in the Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Grenadier Regiment No. 89 in Schwerin . As Major went Ompteda 1896 Grenadier Regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm II." (1st Silesian) no. 10 of Wroclaw , and three years later as commander of the II. Battalion in the 7th Thuringian Infantry Regiment. 96 in Gera appointed . In 1902 he was transferred to the infantry regiment “von der Goltz” (7th Pommersches) No. 54 in Kolberg as a lieutenant colonel .

In 1904, Ompteda took part in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion in China as leader of the 2nd East Asian Infantry Regiment .

Promoted to colonel , he returned to Germany in 1906 and was appointed commander of the 8th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 153 in Altenburg . Promoted to major general, he was appointed commander of the 55th Infantry Brigade in Karlsruhe in 1909. His wife died here in 1910. In 1912 he married her younger sister Augusta von Stieglitz. In the same year 1912 he was put on disposition as lieutenant general and moved to Israelsdorf , where he spent his retirement until August 1914 and was chairman of the Lübeck branch of the scout corps .

When the First World War broke out, Ompteda was re-used as a zD officer and on October 2, 1914, was appointed commander of the 42nd Reserve Infantry Brigade. He was lightly wounded at the battle of Noyon and wounded again near Bouziers . Ompteda died on January 15, 1915 from the wounds he had suffered.

In the following week, the lieutenant general was cremated in Lübeck with great sympathy. There is no evidence of an urn grave in Lübeck. The memorial stands in the Lübeck cemetery for him and his son, who died a little later.
