Herzog Ernst Medal

The Duke Ernst Medal was donated on September 16, 1906 by Duke Ernst I of Saxony-Altenburg on the occasion of his 80th birthday to recognize merits of all kinds, in particular merits to the ducal house or the public good.

The front of the silver medal shows the left-facing bust of the founder in uniform with his coat slung over his neck. The inscription ERNST HERZOG VON SACHSEN-ALTENBURG all around . On the back is the decorated initial E (Ernst) and above it the ducal crown . Next to it on the left the year 1826 and on the right 1906 . Below on the lower edge September 16th .

Since August 1, 1909, the medal with the portrait of Duke Ernst II has been awarded. The award underwent further changes on August 31, 1915 with the introduction of the crown , which was donated to recognize special services in the field of voluntary health and welfare care during the First World War with a ribbon bow in silver bearing the year 1914 .

In the same year, swords for war merit were introduced. The sword and crown award was given for repeated war merit. In addition, the members of his retinue who had accompanied him into the field received the medal with a three-leaved silver oak leaf on the ribbon. Then the year 1914/15 .

The award was worn on a sky blue ribbon with lemon yellow stripes on the left chest.

Finally, on June 29, 1918, the donation of the Herzog-Ernst-Medal 1st class with swords as a plug-in cross took place last.

The sign of the order is a four-armed Georgskreuz that is surrounded by a dense wreath (left oak leaves , right laurel ). The Herzog Ernst medal on the cross. The swords run through the cross angles.
