Max Büttner (born March 6, 1859 in Potsdam , † May 30, 1927 in Karlsruhe ) was a German opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Büttner, the son of a tax inspector, was made aware of his special singing voice by his singing teacher at the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin in autumn 1880 . As a result, Büttner gave up his chemistry studies, which he had already begun, took lessons with Louise Reß and Julius Hey in Berlin, and appeared there for the first time publicly on June 24th as "Zar" in Albert Lortzing's opera Zar und Zimmermann . Since then he has devoted himself entirely to his musical career as a baritone. He found his first engagement at the Princely Theater in Sondershausen , where he stayed for a year. In 1884 he came to the Stadttheater Mainz , then to the court theater in Coburg , where he was the first and sole baritone player until 1901. After a successful guest appearance as "Friedrich von Telramund" in Richard Wagner's Lohengrin and in the role of "Dutchman" in Der Fliegende Holländer , he joined the Association of the Court Theater in Karlsruhe in the same year as Fritz Plank's successor . He was engaged there until 1924.

Contemporary reception

“Singers of the highest musical grade, who at the same time earned him a reputation as an oratorio singer. The warmth of the heart that emanated from him was also convincingly expressed in play and voice. When he left the stage at an old age, the love of the people of Karlsruhe went with him, which was shown once again with his last Hans Sachs - he sang it over a hundred times. "
