Albert Herzog (writer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albert Herzog (born March 26, 1867 in Barmen (now part of Wuppertal ); † August 8, 1955 in Baden-Baden ) was a German writer , journalist , poet and storyteller . He was the older brother of the well-known writer Rudolf Herzog .

Life

Albert Herzog was born the son of a printer . His mother died in 1874. Herzog initially learned a commercial profession, but began writing at an early age. At the age of 18 he had already published a drama and several poems - the latter as a book of poems Jungwuppertal (1886) together with his brother and other authors. He was also giving lectures at this time.

So he soon turned to journalism and initially became editor-in-chief of the Generalanzeiger für Elberfeld-Barmen . From 1890 he worked in Berlin as head of the editorial office of the Frankfurter Journal and represented the Deutsche Zeitung from Moscow . In 1892 he became director of the literary office of the German Writers' Association. From 1893 to 1920 he was editor-in-chief of the Badische Presse from Karlsruhe , from 1922 to 1932 of the Barmer Zeitung . In Karlsruhe he was a member of the Freemason Lodge Leopold zur Loyalty .

After the end of his active working life, he lived in Baden-Baden, where he died in 1955.

He gained importance less as a writer than as a journalist, especially during his long career in Karlsruhe. The spectacular murder trial against Carl Hau also took place at this time , against whose outcome - death sentence with conversion to life imprisonment - Herzog expressed himself so vehemently that he himself was sentenced to one year in prison; Of these, however, he only served four months, from March to July 1909.

He maintained close contacts with the Baden court and received several awards, especially in connection with the First World War , both from the Grand Duke and on a national level.

His estate is now partly in the Baden State Library and partly in the Karlsruhe City Archives .
