Hermann Kluge

Hermann Kluge (born March 11, 1832 in Ehrenhain , † April 25, 1914 in Altenburg ) was a German writer , librarian and teacher .

Life

Born the son of a master carpenter, Kluge attended the Herzogliche Friedrich-Gymnasium in Altenburg and then, thanks to a scholarship, studied Protestant theology in Jena , where he was particularly influenced by Karl August Hase . In addition, he made language studies of philological , Germanic , oriental and Sanskrit language . During his studies in 1851 he became a member of the Arminia fraternity in the castle cellar . In the winter semester of 1853/54 he studied philology in Heidelberg , and in 1854 in Leipzig . In 1854 he took his first and in 1856 his second theology exam, both in Leipzig, where he was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate . In 1856 he became a catechist at the Peterskirche in Leipzig and attended the educational seminars in Berlin , Köpenick , Münsterberg, Bautzen and Dresden . In 1857 he was supposed to go to the Altenburg teacher training college, but was given a short term position as a religion teacher at the Altenburg Friedrichsgymnasium. In 1865 he was appointed professor of religion there. In 1885 he took over provisionally and then from 1889 to 1913 finally the position of director of the ducal private and state library in Altenburg. He was also the administrator of the Ducal Coin Cabinet , which is why he dealt with numismatics and became a collector of autographs , bookplates and coins himself . He later had to resign due to an eye condition.

He was a member and later an honorary member of the Altenburg Art Association and a member of the Altenburg Literary Association .
