Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Ompteda (born November 26, 1765 in Ahlden an der Aller , † June 18, 1815 in La Haye Sainte ) was a Hanoverian officer.

Life

At the age of six (1771) he was sent to his uncle Dietrich Heinrich Ludwig von Ompteda (1746-1803) for education , in 1777 he joined the royal page corps in Hanover and in 1781 became an ensign in the guards regiment on foot.

In 1793 he became head of a grenadier company in the war against the French Republic, where he was badly wounded at Mont Cassel . In 1794 he was in England with Field Marshal Wilhelm von Freytag and in 1803 became a major in the Hanoverian Guard Regiment. When the Kurhannoversche army was disbanded according to the Artlenburg Convention of July 5, 1803, he was one of the first in the King's German Legion in England.

In 1805 he led an unsuccessful expedition to northern Germany and the following year he moved with his battalion to Gibraltar . Another year later (1807) they moved to Zealand and took part in the fight against Denmark . On the way back, his ship capsized on the Dutch coast and he was held captive on Borkum until he was released the following year through a prisoner exchange. In 1812 he was appointed lieutenant colonel and in 1813 he was in command of the 1st light battalion. Two years later (1815) he was Colonel and Commander of the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Division under Lieutenant General Carl von Alten in the 1st Allied Corps, into which the King's German Legion was integrated, at the battle Waterloo involved.

Ompteda fell while trying to lead his troops on the orders of the Prince of Orange in column formation on the contested farm of La Haye Sainte .
