Page corps in Berlin-Lichterfelde.

The page corps ( French : Corps des Pages ) was the collective name for a group of court servants since the 18th century. Mainly young nobles, who were prepared for their own careers through their work at royal courts, as well as cadets of the cadet institutions served as pages . They learned the customs of courtly protocol and the procedures of politics. The page corps was headed by the page governor . Only a few well-known facilities are mentioned below. A special case was the page corps in Saint Petersburg , which was trained as an independent school. Comparable institutions are also attested for France , Thailand and other countries.

Prussia

In 1798 the court page institute in Prussia consisted of the page governor, a court master, two personal pages and twelve court pages. Students of the Potsdam Court Page Institute had previously received training at the Berlin Cadet Academy.

German imperial court

The page corps at the German imperial court consisted of 30 to 40 selected pupils from the Prussian main cadet institution in Lichterfelde . The handbook on the Prussian court and state specifies the court page institute for Wilhelm II 's court , which consisted of two personal pages (for the emperor and empress) and 24 court pages . The responsible page governor had to prepare the cadets for their service at court. The page governor had to ensure training and supervision, especially on solemn occasions when page services had to be performed at court.

Royal Court of Hanover

In the " Page Regulations" of the manual for the establishment and management of a court - The Court Marshal of Carl Ernst von Malortie it was specified that the commander of the cadet company acted as page governor at the Hanoverian court, the cadets had to take over the functions of the pages. The page governor was subordinate to the court marshal's office and had to give the pages the necessary instructions about their services and to personally manage and supervise the work of the pages (usually being towed and waiting at table) during the court festivals. He had to receive the uniforms of the pages to be deployed from the High Court Commissioner and to return them after use. The page governor also had to make suggestions to the Oberhofmarschallamt about pages to be used; the final decision, however, rests with the Oberhofmarschallamt. Like the court marshal, the page governor had to report to the head of the cadet institute.

Russian Empire

The Pascheskie Corpus ( Russian Пажеский корпус ) was a military academy in the Russian Empire , in which the sons of nobles and sons of high military personnel were prepared for military service .
