Baron Franz Xaver von Hertling (born June 28, 1780 in Ladenburg , † September 13, 1844 in Munich ) was a Bavarian lieutenant general and minister of war .

Life

family

He came from the Palatinate noble family von Hertling and was the son of the Electorate Councilor Jakob Anton von Hertling (1740–1793) and his wife Maria Anna Antonia von Weiler.

The father's brother Johann Friedrich Stephan von Hertling (1729–1806) was the great-grandfather of the later German Chancellor and Bavarian Prime Minister Georg von Hertling (1843–1919).

In 1816 he married Maria Anna Freiin von Kalkhoff, daughter of Anton Moritz von Kalkhoff, real councilor and secret Reich trainee at the Reichshof Chancellery in Vienna.

Military career

Hertling received his training in the cadet corps , joined the Palatinate-Bavarian army and became a second lieutenant in 1798 . In the campaigns of 1800/15 he was promoted to first lieutenant and rose to colonel . At times, Hertling acted as adjutant to General Bernhard Erasmus von Deroy (1743–1812). In 1814 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Military Max Joseph Order for bravery in the Battle of Bar-sur-Aube on February 27, 1814 .

Hertling was the first commander of the Infantry Leib Regiment from 1814 to 1824 , was promoted to major general and brigade commander in 1824, and in 1836 to lieutenant general and commander of the 4th Infantry Division in Würzburg. From December 12, 1836, Hertling led the affairs of the Minister of War, and in 1837/38 he officially held this office. He also held the dignity of a Bavarian chamberlain .
