Heinrich von der Mark

Heinrich von der Mark (born December 14, 1784 in Aldenhoven , † June 14, 1865 in Bamberg ) was a royal Bavarian lieutenant general . In 1848 he headed the Bavarian War Ministry as administrator for a few months .

Life

Heinrich Ritter von der Mark was one of three sons of the ducal Jülich-Bergischer Hofkammerrat Heinrich von der Mark and his wife Johanna Katharina, born von Esser.

After France occupied the areas on the left bank of the Rhine , the father was asked to send his three sons to the French army, under threat of imprisonment and loss of service. He ignored the request and sent his sons to the Electoral Palatinate-Bavarian army. Heinrich's first brother Philipp fell in the battle of Wagram in 1809 , his second brother Joseph served as an officer in the Bavarian army and was characterized as a colonel and retired in 1838 .

Military background

Heinrich joined the 1st Dragoons Regiment on November 25, 1800 as a commoner with the distinction of a volunteer in Amberg and took part in the campaign against France with this unit . On March 15, 1801 he became an Estandartführer of a squadron in his regiment. When the 4th Chevaulegers Regiment "Bubenhofen" was set up in March 1803, he was transferred to this unit with the same rank, but was promoted to sub-lieutenant in the 3rd Chevaulegers Regiment "Leiningen" on April 18, 1804 . During the campaign against Austria in 1805 he found several opportunities to distinguish himself, a foray from Munich against Aibling and Rosenheim in October 1805 earned him a special commendation.

In the campaign against Prussia in 1806 and 1807, von der Mark, promoted to first lieutenant on December 25, 1806, excelled in the battle at Wartha . He was expressly mentioned in the army order of March 15, 1807. In the following campaign against Austria in 1809 he was able to capture a company of the 2nd Austrian Landwehr Battalion on May 15, 1809 in a battle near Schwaz in Tyrol . With a diploma dated July 20, 1809, following an army order of August 5, 1809, von der Mark received the Order of the French Legion of Honor . While retreating during the Russian campaign in 1812 , he was Rittmeister since April 15, 1812 and was seriously injured in the head in the Battle of Vyazma on November 3.

In the campaign against France in 1813 and 1814, Rittmeister von der Mark took part in the battle of La Rothière on February 1, 1814 . During the fighting, despite bitter resistance from the French cavalry, he managed to capture several guns from a French battery with his squadron. The Chapter of the Royal Bavarian Military Max Joseph Order , chaired by General Heinrich Graf von Reuss , met in Munich on September 5, 1814 , unanimously in favor of the admission of the Marks to the order because of his services in the battle of La Rothière , which followed an army order of June 24, 1814. A first commendation was given in the army order of February 16, 1814 and the Imperial Russian Order of St. Vladimir was awarded with an army order of February 27, 1814.

With the formation of the Cuirassier Regiment in March 1815, von der Mark became the last one on April 1, 1815, with promotion to Major , and with the formation of the 2nd Cuirassier Regiment in September 1815, on October 1, 1815 the last Regiment moved. On June 1, 1826 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the 2nd cuirassier regiment "Johann Nepomuk Prince of Saxony". In this rank he changed on September 1, 1826 to the 2nd Chevaulegers Regiment "Taxis" and on January 1, 1832 as a colonel in the 3rd Chevaulegers Regiment "Duke Maximilian of Bavaria". With an army order of November 29, 1838, Colonel von der Mark received the Russian Order of St. Anne, 2nd class. Since April 27, 1841 Major General and Brigadier of the 4th Army Division, the Cross of Honor of the Order of Ludwig was awarded by the Mark with the highest signature of November 3, 1841, according to the army order of December 25, 1841 .

On February 1, 1848, the leadership of the royal Bavarian war ministry was transferred from the mark as administrator. On March 31, 1848 he was promoted to lieutenant general. But on April 5, 1848, at his own request, he was released from running the War Ministry. After he received his appointment as commander of the 2nd Cavalry Division in Ansbach on November 20, 1848 , he was retired on September 10, 1849, after he had submitted his departure, due to illness.

Heinrich von der Mark died on June 14, 1865 at the age of 80 in Bamberg.
