Minister of War von Pranckh

Siegmund Freiherr von Pranckh (born December 5, 1821 in Altötting , †  May 8, 1888 in Munich ) was a Bavarian infantry general and minister of war .

Life

He came from the Bavarian line of the old noble family von Pranckh .

Pranckh joined the army in 1840 from the cadet corps in Munich and, promoted to captain in 1849 , worked on the staff of the Quartermaster General . He remained in the War Ministry until 1863 and then came as a colonel in the 3rd Infantry Regiment and then in 1865 in the Leibregiment , with which he stormed the village of Nüdlingen in the German War on July 10, 1866 at the meeting near Kissingen .

Shortly thereafter, Pranckh became Minister of War, and in this position achieved great merit through the reorganization of the army in 1868.

Promoted to lieutenant general immediately after the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War , he carefully and energetically organized the replenishment and catering of the army, after it had suffered considerable losses. He was also significantly involved in the conclusion of the November Treaty on November 23, 1870 in Versailles, which included the accession of the Kingdom of Bavaria to the North German Confederation . For his achievements he was rewarded with a donation of 100,000 thalers from war compensation.

In 1872 Pranckh initiated another army reform. In early 1875 he was promoted to general of the infantry and on April 4, 1875, at his request, released from the management of the War Ministry. In 1876 he was appointed captain general of the Hartschiere bodyguard

On December 4, 1869, the king appointed him owner of the 8th Infantry Regiment , which was called the 8th Infantry Regiment "Pranckh" until his death. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the war against France in 1870/71, the regiment was renamed after Pranckh on December 7, 1895 and continued the name until April 25, 1901.

Angel of Peace in Munich

Together with the German emperors Wilhelm I , Friedrich III. , Wilhelm II , Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and Generals Helmuth von Moltke , Albrecht von Roon , Ludwig von der Tann and Jakob von Hartmann , Pranckh the Angel of Peace was set as a memorial. It commemorates the 25 peaceful years after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. In the hall of the temple are the portraits of the persons named and gold mosaics , the allegories represent war and peace, victory and blessing for the culture.

Carl von Landmann on Pranckh:

Quiet and serious in his whole being, simple and needless, in short, a distinguished, open and energetic character, imperturbably fair and if necessary strict, P. is one of the important men of the great times in which the new German Reich was born is.
