Bavarian Army Reform (1868)
After the experiences of the Bavarian Army in the German war of 1866 against Prussia and the protection and defensive alliance concluded with Prussia, the Bavarian War Ministry under Siegmund Freiherr von Pranckh was forced to reorganize the army fundamentally according to the Prussian model .
The most important measures were:
- Change of the army supplement (abolition of the conscripts ; introduction of compulsory military service , introduction of " one-year voluntary service " according to the Prussian model and three years of service)
- Abolition of the Landwehr , henceforth the term "Landwehr" was used for the older age groups of the reserve .
- Founding of the 1st General Command in Munich and the 2nd General Command in Würzburg
- Replacement of the muzzle loader initially with the infantry rifle M / 1858/67 ( Podewils rifle ), a muzzle loader converted into a breech loader, and from May 1870 by the Werder rifle M / 1869
- Equalization of the cadet corps with the Realgymnasium .
- Separation from the army and gendarmerie .
This reorganization made it possible for the Bavarian Army to catch up with the further development of the military until the Franco-German War .
