William of Le Suire

Georg Wilhelm von Le Suire (born June 9, 1787 in Mengeringhausen , † March 10, 1852 in Nuremberg ) was a lieutenant general and from 1848 to 1849 Bavarian and under King Otto of Greece also Greek war minister.

Life

origin

The Le Suire family comes from central France and was first mentioned there around 1406. Converted to Protestantism, Daniel von Le Suire had to flee to Germany in 1670 and entered the service of Prince zu Öttingen-Wallerstein . Here family members held various positions as civil servants and officers. In 1820 they were accepted into the hereditary nobility of the Kingdom of Bavaria by the Bavarian King Maximilian I Joseph , citing their aristocratic origins .

Career

Georg Wilhelm von Le Suire joined the Bavarian Army in 1806 and took part in the campaigns from 1809 to 1815. In 1817 he was promoted to major in the General Staff . From June 1, 1822 to May 26, 1833 he was in command of the 1st Jäger Battalion "König" and rose in this position in 1832 to lieutenant colonel .

In 1833 Le Suire went to Greece with Prince (later King) Otto and in 1834 became Minister of War in the cabinet of Alexandros Mavrokordatos .

In 1835 the officer returned to Bavaria, was promoted to colonel and took over as commander of the 5th Infantry Regiment from 1835 to 1840 . In 1840 he became major general and brigade commander, in 1848 lieutenant general and commander of the 3rd division . From November 21, 1848 to May 29, 1849 he served as Bavarian Minister of War. Then he resigned due to illness and worked again, until his death, as a division commander.

Wilhelm von Le Suire died in Nuremberg in 1852 and was buried in the city's historic military cemetery; his grave monument comes from the sculptor Johann Konrad.

family

Le Suire married on January 1, 1824 in Burghausen with Sophie Countess von Berchem (1802-1835), daughter of the Bavarian councilor Maximilian von Berchem and Josepha, née Countess Fugger von Zinneberg. After the untimely death of his first wife, Le Suire was married to Adolfine von Danckelmann (1817–1899) in Nuremberg on May 16, 1837 , whereby Altenmuhr Castle came into the possession of the Le Suire family.

The marriages produced eight children. Maximilian (1825–1875) became Bavarian major and commander of the Landwehr district command in Ansbach, Günther (1846–1906) Bavarian chamberlain and major general , and u. a. Adjutant to Prince Arnulf of Bavaria and Leopold of Bavaria . His son Günther Adolf Karl von Le Suire (1880-1950), Bavarian chamberlain, officer and ministerial director, took part in the peace negotiations in Versailles and London from 1919 to 1921 as a German diplomat.
