Franz Xaver Adolf von Heinleth (born October 24, 1823 in Munich , † February 26, 1895 there ) was a Bavarian infantry general and minister of war .

Life

origin

Adolf was a son of the secretary at the court of appeal for the Illerkreis Franz de Paula von Heinleth (1771-1824) and his wife Ursula, née Pilgram († 1858).

Military career

After education in the cadet corps in 1842 joined Heinleth as Junker in the Infantry Regiment body of the Bavarian army in Munich. He took part in the German War of 1866 as a major and general staff officer in the 4th Division. In the Franco-Prussian War he distinguished himself as a lieutenant colonel and chief of the general staff of the 1st Army Corps at Wörth , Sedan and Orléans . Especially when taking Orleans on October 11, 1870, he excelled by personally leading the attack of the 1st Infantry Regiment "König" . For this achievement, Heinleth was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Military Max Joseph Order .

A few months after his promotion to major general , Heinleth joined the occupation brigade in Metz in 1875 and in 1878 became chief of the army general staff , and in 1882 commander of the 4th division and lieutenant general . In April 1885 he was appointed State Councilor and Minister of War. In this position he was responsible for the full reparteeism of the army and its contractual compliance with the Reichsheer .

In May 1890 he retired for health reasons. On the occasion of his farewell, Prince Regent Luitpold paid tribute to him by awarding him the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown .

family

Heinleth married Wilhelmina Gärtner (1838–1923), a daughter of the architect Friedrich von Gärtner, in Munich on February 10, 1857 . The couple had several children:
