Franz Xaver Maximilian Giehrl , since 1893 Ritter von Giehrl (born October 11, 1840 in Vilseck , † December 16, 1896 in Munich ) was a Bavarian lieutenant general and chief of the army general staff .

Maximilian was the son of the district court doctor Franz Xaver Giehrl and his wife Josepha, née Oittner.

Military career

After visiting the Cadet Corps , Giehrl joined the 1st Infantry Regiment "König" of the Bavarian Army on August 16, 1858 as a Junker . With the award the elevation to the personal nobility was connected and he was allowed to call himself "Ritter von Giehrl" from February 24, 1893 after the entry in the nobility register .

From May 23, 1893 he was in command of the 2nd Infantry Brigade and at the beginning of August 1893 received the Crown Medal, 2nd class with a star. Giehrl was promoted to lieutenant general on January 15, 1895, and was appointed Chief of the Army General Staff and at the same time was entrusted with running the business as the inspector of the military educational institutions. Prince Regent Luitpold paid tribute to him in December 1895 by being awarded the Grand Commander's Cross of the Order of Military Merit. Giehrl died on December 16, 1896 in the course of his service.

family

Giehrl married Georgine Narciß, daughter of the Bavarian Major General Georg von Narciß , in Regensburg on April 15, 1872 . The marriage produced five sons and one daughter. His son Hermann (1877–1923) was also elevated to the personal nobility during the First World War as a major by being awarded the Military Max Joseph Order .
