Karl Endres , Knight of Endres since 1897 (born October 2, 1847 in Munich , † December 24, 1907 ibid) was a Bavarian lieutenant general .

Life

Karl was the son of the appellate judge Philipp Endres and his first wife Amalie, nee Huberti. His brother Nikolaus also had a career in the Bavarian Army and made it up to general of the infantry .

Military career

Endres attended a humanistic grammar school and then studied law .

In June 1870 he joined the 3rd field artillery regiment "Queen Mother" of the Bavarian Army as a volunteer . Endres participated with this regiment in 1870/71 during the war against France in the battle near Beaumont , the Battle of Sedan and the siege of Paris . During the war he was promoted to lieutenant on January 9, 1871 , and was awarded the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Military Merit with Swords and the Iron Cross 2nd Class for his services . After the Peace of Frankfurt he returned to the garrison in Munich and completed courses at the artillery and engineering school from 1874 to 1876 . This was followed by a visit to the War Academy until 1879 , which pronounced him the first line qualification for the general staff, then for the higher adjutantage. Furthermore, due to his performance, he was earmarked for special consideration.

Promoted to Prime Lieutenant on November 3, 1880 , Endres was transferred to inspect the artillery and the train for two years in 1882 and then served in the 2nd field artillery regiment "Horn" . Transferred to the Central Office of the General Staff in early 1886, he was promoted to captain on March 10, 1886 . This was accompanied by the appointment as adjutant to the Chief of the General Staff. From 1888 to 1891 Endres was assigned to the Great General Staff in Berlin . Then he returned as a major in the troop service and acted until 1895 as commander of the 2nd division in the 3rd field artillery regiment "Queen Mother". Subsequently transferred to the General Staff of the I. Army Corps , Endres was appointed Chief of the General Staff on May 10, 1896 with the promotion to Lieutenant Colonel .

For his many years of service, Endres was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown by Prince Regent Luitpold on September 9, 1897 . With the award, the elevation to the personal nobility was connected and he was allowed to call himself Knight of Endres after the entry in the nobility register .

On May 12, 1898 he was given command of the 1st Field Artillery Regiment "Prince Regent Luitpold" and was promoted to colonel shortly afterwards on June 11 . After Endres had given up the association on February 21, 1900, he was commander of the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade until September 12, 1901 . Then he was presented with the uniform of the regiment à la suite of the army and on October 26, 1901, with the rank of brigade commander, he was appointed military representative in Berlin. At the same time, he also acted as an agent for the Federal Council of the German Empire . In these positions he was promoted to major general on November 6, 1901 and to lieutenant general on March 19, 1904. Endres returned to Bavaria on March 22, 1905 and was commander of the 2nd division in Augsburg until September 14, 1905 . Subsequently appointed chief of the general staff of the army, he also acted as inspector of the military educational institutions until his death.

family

Endres married Sophie Scheel, known as Gebel, on December 16, 1873. The marriage produced six sons, including the later major and writer Franz Carl Endres .
