Order of Ludwig (Bavaria)
The Ludwig Order was established by statute of August 25, 1827 by King Ludwig I of Bavaria on his birthday and name day and was intended to honor persons in court, state, war and church offices who were in their fiftieth year of service at that time completed.
Order classes
The medal was awarded in two stages:
- cross
- Honor coin
The Cross were officers of the army , court and state ministers and clergymen with the rank of Council. The honor coin was intended for people of lower rank. When calculating the service time, the service time of soldiers in the field counted twice. The award was given retrospectively to people who had already reached their 50th anniversary at the time of the foundation.
Order decoration
The sign of the order is a golden Pisan cross covered by the crown, in whose white enamelled central shield on the obverse the portrait of the donor can be seen. On the arms of the cross there is the raised inscription LUDWIG KOENIG VON BAYERN , horizontally from left to right . In the lapel of a thick green oak wreath enclosed FOR HONORED FULL FIFTY YEARS OF SERVICE . On the cross arms in the same arrangement ON AUGUST 25, 1827 .
The honor coin is also made of gold and shows the portrait of the donor facing left with the inscription LUDWIG KOENIG VON BAYERN . The illustration of the lapel is identical to that of the cross, but the date of the foundation is under the wreath of oak leaves.
Carrying method
The award was worn on a crimson ribbon with sky-blue stripes on the left side of the chest.
Award numbers
The medal was awarded until 1914. A total of 1118 awards can be proven up to this point in time.
