Clement Villecourt

Clément Villecourt (born October 9, 1787 in Lyon , † January 17, 1867 in Rome ) was a French cardinal and from 1836 to 1856 bishop of La Rochelle .

Life

Clément Villecourt came from Lyon and studied there for three years theology . After his studies he was ordained a priest on December 21, 1811 . Villecourt initially exercised his priesthood in parishes in the Archdiocese of Lyon and from 1818 was chaplain in various hospitals . From 1823 he was a theologian member of the cathedral chapter of Meaux , where he also became vicar general . After nine years in Meaux Villecourt went to Sens in 1832 , where he became vicar general of the diocese in 1835.

On February 1, 1836, he was appointed Bishop of La Rochelle . He was ordained bishop on March 13, 1836, by the Archbishop of Sens, Jean-Joseph-Marie-Victoire de Cosnac , co - consecrators were Jacques-Louis-David de Séguin des Hons , Bishop of Troyes , and Romain-Frédéric Gallard , Bishop of Meaux . On June 20, 1843, Cillecourt became Papal Assistant to the Throne .

On December 17, 1855, Pope Pius IX took him . as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals , three days later he was assigned the titular church of San Pancrazio fuori le mura . In 1856 he gave up the leadership of the diocese of La Rochelle and moved to the Roman Curia .

Clément Villecourt died in Rome when he was almost 80 years old. He was buried in his titular church.
