Ozone Park
Ozone Park is a neighborhood (neighborhood) in New York City district ( borough ) Queens . It is considered an upper middle class district.
geography
Ozone Park is located in southwest Queens borough and is bordered by Woodhaven , Richmond Hill , South Ozone Park , Howard Beach (all in Queens) and East New York and City Line (in Brooklyn ). The northern boundary is Atlantic Avenue , the southern boundary is Conduit Avenue, and 108th Street is the eastern boundary. The western border with Brooklyn is essentially defined by Ruby and Drew Street. In Ozone Park is the Aqueduct Racetrack , a horse racing track.
history
The Centerville district was founded in 1840 . During the economic downturn in the 1870s, Manhattan and Brooklyn residents sought cheaper housing. This was created by the builders Benjamin W. Hitchcock and Charles C. Denton, who turned farmland into residential land. In 1882 they created Ozone Park. The name should be reminiscent of the fresh air of the Atlantic Ocean . In 1894 the Aqueduct Racetrack was opened. The area was enormously developed with the rail link to Liberty Avenue in 1914. Between the 1920s and 1930s, the building program was greatly developed.
Demographics
Since its inception, Ozone Park has been characterized by a multi-ethnic composition. First came French, later German and Irish immigrants. The heavy influx of Italians, which led to the nickname Little Italy of Queens (a reference to Little Italy Manhattan), occurred at the beginning of the 20th century. Most of the Italians and Italian-Americans were from Brooklyn. Polish immigrants also came. At the beginning of the new millennium, more immigrants came from Latin America and South Asia ( Bangladesh ).
