Production and broadcast
The series was actually designed as a half-hour comedy series and was developed for Showtime , but was not accepted there in spring 2015. For the station The CW, which otherwise has no comedies in the regular broadcasting period, this format was unsuitable, which is why the series was reworked into a three-quarter-hour dramedy after the takeover from the sister station.
Thanks to an increase, the first season consisted of 18 episodes. On March 11, 2016, the series was extended for a second season.
The broadcast of the second season began on October 21, 2016 and ended on February 3, 2017. In January 2017, the production of a third season was announced. The third season aired from October 13, 2017 to February 16, 2018. The fourth season ran from October 12, 2018 to April 5, 2019.
subjects
The series repeatedly deals with some controversial or unpopular topics. The core topics are mental illnesses and their treatments. Further topics are female sexuality, sexual orientation and family planning as well as stalking and ideals of beauty.
reception
The series received mostly positive reviews from critics in the US media, among other things because of the script, the musical numbers and the performance of the leading actress. For example, the series received 97% positive ratings on "Rotten Tomatoes" in the first season. In the German-language media, the series was described as a "feminist series that easily addresses the topic of mental health", "subversive, self-deprecating and self-reflective series" and as a "mixture of weird humor and intelligent Content ".
