Esther Povitsky (2012)

Esther Povitsky (born March 2, 1988 in Chicago ), sometimes known under the stage name Little Esther, is an American actress and comedian . She is co-creator and leading actress of the comedy series Alone Together (2018-2019) and has appeared as Izzy in the Hulu series Dollface since 2019 . Her first comedy special, Hot for My Name , aired on Comedy Central on July 17, 2020 .

Life

childhood and education

Povitsky was born in Chicago , Illinois . Her father is of Russian Jewish descent and her mother is a Christian of Finnish descent. Povitsky grew up in the Chicago suburb of Skokie . She graduated from Niles North High School in 2006.

After high school, Povitsky attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for three years before dropping out to pursue a career as a stand-up comedian and actress. “I was really unhappy at my university,” Povitsky recalls. "A lot of people were fraternities and a lot of people were drinking all the time, and I didn't like either, so I really didn't feel I belonged." She then studied comedy at the iO Theater and Second City in Chicago before moving to Los Angeles where she took lessons from the Groundlings. In Los Angeles, Povitsky has performed regularly at the Comedy Store, The Ice House and The Improv.

Career

Povitsky played the role of Maya in the series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend between 2016 and 2019 . She also appeared on Brooklyn Nine-Nine , Love and Parks and Recreation . Povitsky was also seen for several rounds in the ninth season of Last Comic Standing .

In 2012, Povitsky turned down an offer from MTV to do a reality show based on her life as a comedian because she felt the series was too invasive.

She is also active as a podcaster .

In 2015, Povitsky starred in the short film Alone Together, which she also wrote and produced the script for. The short film was later adapted into a pilot film for the US broadcaster Freeform , which was produced by The Lonely Island . In December 2016, the production of a series based on the pilot was announced. In October 2017, Freeform renewed the series for a second season before debuting in January 2018. After the second season in 2019, the series was canceled.

On July 17, 2020, Povitsky's first comedy special, Hot for My Name, was released by Comedy Central .
