The Express (originally also: The Express: The Ernie Davis Story ) is an American athlete - drama from 2008 . The biography shows the life of American football player Ernie Davis .

action

The black Ernie Davis grew up in Dallas, Texas, where he met a lot of headwinds because of his skin color. At the age of ten, he moved to New York with his mother, where he began playing football and was a fairly successful running back at the same time . At the same time, black running back Jim Brown plays for Syracuse University and thanks to an engagement by the Cleveland Browns, he makes the leap into the professional league. Shortly before his departure, Brown and his head coach Ben Schwartzwalder visited Davis to recruit him for the Syracus, which he succeeded.

There he plays for the Syracus Orange, where he makes an important contribution to the fact that they remain undefeated and thus play in the Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas. There they meet the Texas Longhorns, who act brutally and illegally against the black players, which degenerates into a mass brawl shortly before the end of the first half. Because Davis was already weakened by an injury from training, his coach decides that Davis will not play in the second half. However, since he sees himself as a role model for the black community, he returns shortly before the end of the game and ensures victory for his team. He was named Most Valuable Player of the Coton Bowl and later also received the Heisman Trophy as the first black . After college, he is selected by the Cleveland Browns as the overall first in the NFL Draft , where he would like to play with Jim Brown.

Shortly afterwards, he receives the message that he has leukemia and will not play. The film ends with the information that Davis died on May 18, 1963 at the age of only 23 and that the Browns banned his number even though he had never played a down .
