Ernest "Ernie" Davis (* 14. December 1939 in New Salem-Buffington , Pennsylvania ; † 18th May 1963 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was an American American football poker players in the position of running backs . Davis, nicknamed Elmira Express , was the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy .

In college football , he played number 44 for Syracuse University and helped his team to their first title. He was selected as the first player in the 1962 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins , but was immediately transferred to the Cleveland Browns in December 1961 . In the summer of 1962 he was diagnosed with leukemia , which Davis never played in the National Football League (NFL).

In 2008 his life was filmed by Gary Fleder under the title The Express with Rob Brown in the lead role, based on the book Ernie Davis: The Elmira Express by Robert C. Gallagher.
