John Gregory Huarte (born April 6, 1944 in Anaheim , California ) is a retired American football player .
He was active in college football between 1962 and 1964 as quarterback for the Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame and was honored with the 1964 Heisman Trophy for best player. This makes him the sixth player in the history of Notre Dame Fighting Irish to receive this award. He is considered one of the most extraordinary Heisman winners in the history of college football, as he was only promoted to the starting line-up of the Fighting Irish in his senior year at university due to an injury , which was taken over by head coach Ara Parseghian that same year .
John Huarte was selected in both the NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles and the AFL Draft by the New York Jets in 1965 . He played in the American Football League (AFL) for one season in 1965 for the Jets before he was also active in the AFL for the Boston Patriots in 1966/1967 . In 1968 he moved to the National Football League (NFL) for the Philadelphia Eagles . From 1969 to 1971 he played in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs and in 1972 with the Chicago Bears . In 1974/1975 he was active with the Memphis Southmen in the short-lived World Football League .
Since the end of his professional career, he has been doing business as the owner of a tile and marble retail chain represented in several states. He is married and has five children. In 2005 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame .
