John Joseph "Johnny" Lattner (born  October 24, 1932 in Chicago , Illinois , † February 12, 2016 in Melrose Park , Illinois) was an American American football player .

He played college football as halfback for the Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame between 1951 and 1953 and received the Maxwell Award in 1952 and 1953 and the Heisman Trophy for best player in 1953 . This makes him, alongside Tim Tebow, the only college football player to date to have received the Maxwell Award twice, and the fourth Heisman winner in the history of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish .

In the 1954 NFL Draft he was committed in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers , for which he only played for one season. He then joined the United States Air Force in 1955 , where he sustained a serious knee injury during a football game . In 1957 he returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers , but ended his career after a training camp due to his knee problems.

After the end of his active career, he briefly worked as a football coach at a high school in Wisconsin and at the University of Denver . He later owned a restaurant in Chicago, among other things, and was assistant sales manager for a printing and advertising studio until shortly before his death.

Johnny Lattner was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979. He died on February 12, 2016 as a result of mesothelioma at the age of 81.
