Jonathan Paul "Johnny" Manziel (* 6. December 1992 in Tyler , Texas ) is a former American American football - and Canadian football poker players at the position of quarterback . He played college football for Texas A&M University and became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012 . In the National Football League (NFL) he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2014 and served for them until 2015. Most recently he played with the Memphis Express in the Alliance of American Football (AAF).

High school and college

Manziel was already at the Tivy High School in Kerrville as the best football player among the students of his state. He won the title of Player of the Year from the Association of High School Coaches ("National High School Coach Association Football Player of the Year") and Representatives of the Press ("Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Player of the Year"). He had such a reputation that fans christened him “Johnny Football” in 2012 even before his first A&M Aggies college season . At only 1.83 meters, he is rather small for the position, but runs well. In his first season, he managed to pass and run over 500 yards three times . His 5,116 yards for the season are most of a Heisman Trophy winner , with 47 touchdowns matching his predecessor Robert Griffin III . When he won the Cotton Bowl , he ran 229 yards, the most yards a quarterback ever ran in a bowl. The Aggies defeated the eventual winner of the Bowl Championship Series , the Alabama Crimson Tide , but lost two season games against other opponents.

On January 8, 2014, Manziel announced that he would join the 2014 NFL Draft , ending his college football career after just two years.

NFL

Johnny Manziel was selected as the 22nd player in the 1st round by the Cleveland Browns in the 2014 NFL Draft . He scored his first touchdown on November 30, 2014 in the 13th game week against the Buffalo Bills . Against the Cincinnati Bengals Manziel was the starting quarterback for the first time , but played moderately (two interceptions at 93 yards of space) and injured himself in the next game against the Carolina Panthers , so he was out the rest of the season.

In the 2015 season he fought with Josh McCown for the post of starting quarterback. McCown won but injured himself in the first game of the season. Manziel then started against the Tennessee Titans on matchday two and led the Browns to their first win. However, McCown, who had recovered, soon pushed him back to the reserve bench. On November 17, 2015, Head Coach Mike Pettine announced that only Manziel would appear as quarterback until the end of the season. However, he was demoted to third quarterback on November 24 after a video was released showing Manziel with a champagne bottle in hand at a party in Texas during the past week without a game.

The following games were played with Josh McCown and Austin Davis as quarterback and were both lost. After the renewed injury McCowns, which meant his season off, Manziel was again appointed starting quarterback. He played two games against the favored Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs , both of which were lost, but Manziel brought in some positive reviews, as they represented an increase over his first year. In the game against the Kansas City Chiefs Manziel suffered a concussion, so that he could not play in the last game of the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers . Again, Manziel made negative headlines when he was spotted in Las Vegas the night before the Pittsburgh game and failed to show up for his medical exam the next morning. After the season he was fired from the Browns.

CFL

On May 19, 2018 it was announced that the Hamilton Tiger-Cats had secured the services of Manziel. On July 22, 2018, Manziel was traded to the Montreal Alouettes . Here he started in eight games, in which he completed 106 of 165 passes for 1,290 yards and five touchdowns. At the same time he threw seven interceptions. However, on February 27, 2019, a breach of his CFL contract became known, after which he was released by the Alouettes.

AAF

On March 17, 2019, the Memphis Express signed the Alliance of American Football Manziel. After the league disbanded after the eighth game day of the regular season, Manziel was also there without working papers.

Private life

Manziel has received extreme public interest since his college success and especially after defeating Alabama. His friends include LeBron James , Justin Bieber and Drake . Drake dedicated the song Draft Day to Johnny Manziel .

Due to his extroverted lifestyle, Manziel was often criticized by the media and also by his employer, the Cleveland Browns. His escapades were intensified by the fact that after his miserable first season he went into inpatient rehab, which initially seemed to lead to a changed way of life, before it became apparent at the end of the 2015 season that Manziel fell into old habits again .
