John Matthew Stafford (* 7 February 1988 in Tampa , Florida ) is an American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He plays for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL).

Matthew Stafford attended the University of Georgia in Athens , Georgia . At the Capital One Bowl 2009 ( Florida Citrus Bowl ), Stafford was voted MVP .

He was selected in the 2009 NFL Draft as the first player by the Detroit Lions , who in 2008 had a record of 16 defeats in no win. He signed a six-year contract for a maximum of 72 million  dollars , making him one of the highest paid rookies made in the history of the NFL.

In 2009 he was the starting quarterback for the Lions. On November 7, 2010 at the home game against the New York Jets , Stafford injured his right shoulder for the second time, his limb. If he was able to return after six weeks after the first injury, suffered in the first game against the Chicago Bears , the second injury meant the season off for Stafford.

The 2011 season was a successful one for Stafford. With the Lions he won ten games this season (with six defeats) and qualified for the play-offs . Together with Pro-Bowl - Wide receiver Calvin Johnson , he led the offense to, for he 41 touchdowns with only 16 interceptions tossed and a passer rating reached 97.2. With 5,038 yards of space gained, Stafford became the fourth quarterback to surpass the 5,000-yard mark after Dan Marino (1984), Drew Brees and Tom Brady (both 2011).

In the 2012 season he threw 727 passes, setting a new record. He replaced Drew Bledsoe (691), who had held this record since 1994.

In the 2014 season he reached the play-offs with the Lions as the second of the NFC-North, but failed in the wildcard round against the Dallas Cowboys . After the season he was elected to the Pro Bowl for the first time .

On December 13, 2015, he reached in his 90th professional game, making him the fastest quarterback in NFL history, the 25,000-yard mark by passing play, replacing Dan Marino (in 92 games) as the record holder.

On August 28, 2017 wrote Stafford a five-year contract for 135 million US dollars in the Lions what it did at the time the highest paid player in the NFL.
