But with Chenille Reynolds and her brother Derek, she quickly meets new friends. Derek is one of the few hopeful students in the neighborhood and wants to become a pediatrician . On the way there, however, his past in the gang of the brutal Malakai keeps interfering with him. Sara tries to show him that he doesn't need his friendship while Derek introduces her to the world of hip-hop and rekindles her passion for dancing. They become a couple, but their relationship is constantly being tested because of the ethnic differences. Towards the end of the film, Derek has to decide whether he wants to take part in a drive-by shoot with Malakai and finally decides against it.
