Metro - Negotiating is a matter of nerves (original title: Metro ) is an action film with Eddie Murphy from 1997.
action
A hostage taker is holed up in a bank in San Francisco ; the bank is surrounded by police forces. Inspector Scott Roper is a negotiator and is required to do so. Roper recognizes from the hostage taker's police file that the hostage taker has not yet committed a serious crime, and therefore enters the counter unarmed. There he persuades the robber to release some hostages, especially the wounded and bleeding guard. As he brings the security guard out of the building, he asks a member of the SWAT team for his pistol. Back at the bank, Roper asks the robber what kind of getaway car he wants. This distracts the hostage taker's attention and allows Roper to shoot and overwhelm him.
Roper gets a new partner, Kevin McCall, whom he should train to become his deputy. The jewel thief and killer Michael Korda kills Sam, Roper's friend and work colleague. McCall helps Roper arrest Korda. The latter orders the killing of Veronica Tate, Roper's girlfriend, from prison, but this fails. When Korda is able to escape from prison, he kidnaps Roper's girlfriend and as a ransom demands the diamonds he has stolen and confiscated by the police . A showdown between Roper, the smuggled McCall and Korda, in which the latter loses his life, takes place in an abandoned factory site. Ropers girlfriend is saved, and Roper spends with her in the final sequence of the film his vacation to Tahiti .
Reviews
James Berardinelli summed up in reelviews that the film contains everything an action film needs: a vengeful police officer, his endangered girlfriend, a psychopath, shootings, car chases and explosions. Because of too many known elements and the "erratic" story, he can only partially satisfy.
Roger Ebert praised the action scenes and the portrayal of Eddie Murphy in the Chicago Sun-Times (January 17, 1997).
“The story, developed in an implausible way, tries to create tension with rapidly staged car chases and all kinds of 'sleight of hand' tricks. But it gets caught up more and more in the unbelievable structure of the story, the flat characters and a simple-minded humor. "
“A movie in which Eddie Murphy finally tried his hand at being a serious action hero again. He does this surprisingly well. The whole thing was enriched with a lot of action and a few moments of surprise. But as is so often the case with Murphy films, there are also prints for the annoying synchronization. "
"Anyone who can endure Labertasche Murphy experiences a wild cable car hunt through San Francisco and a fiery finale."
"Director Thomas Carter ('Swing Kids') delivers competently prepared action home-style food: not necessarily exotic in the selection of the action ingredients and staging, but always visually appealing with the extremely photogenic backdrop of San Francisco put on the screen [...] a little more whistle This quite formulaic action product certainly looked very good. Murphy's loyal supporters in Germany should, however, keep him going according to the schedule and guide 'Metro' onto the track. "
Awards
The film was nominated at the 1998 Acapulco Black Film Festival for the Black Film Award in the category Best Score.
