Pooh is an Italian pop rock band that was formed in Bologna in 1966 . It is one of the most important and popular music groups on the Italian music scene. She reached the peak of her success in 1971 with the number one hits Tanta voglia di lei and Pensiero , which were followed by a large number of successful albums and singles as well as a victory at the Sanremo Festival in 1990 . On the 50th anniversary of the band, Pooh announced that they would end their activity after 2016.
Band history
The band Pooh was founded by drummer and songwriter Valerio Negrini and emerged from a formation called Jaguars that has been active since 1962 . In 1966 Pooh (named after Winnie the Pooh ) published her first single with Vieni fuori , alongside Negrini at this time Mauro Bertoli, Mario Goretti (both guitar), Gilberto Faggioli (bass) and Bob Gillot (keyboard) were involved. A little later Roby Facchinetti and Riccardo Fogli joined the band and replaced Gillot and Faggioli respectively. At the end of the year the band wanted to compete at the Festival delle rose with the song Brennero '66 , but this had to be censored and renamed Le campane del silenzio because of the political content ( attacks on Italian customs officers in South Tyrol ) . The debut album Per quelli come noi was then released .
Bertoli also left the band after only a year, after which they remained in a formation of four. With Piccola Katy , the band achieved their first chart success in 1968. Soon afterwards, the young guitarist Dodi Battaglia replaced Goretti, who was also retiring. After lengthy disagreements with their label Vedette and efforts to cast off the image of a band tailored only to younger girls, the band switched to CBS . Under the guidance of producer Giancarlo Lucariello, Pooh had two number one hits in 1971, namely with the singles Tanta voglia di lei and Pensiero . This was followed by the album Opera prima , after which, however, founder Negrini withdrew from the limelight (he continued to work for the band as a songwriter); Stefano D'Orazio took his place. In the following year the band was able to build on their great success with the album Alessandra and especially the single Noi due nel mondo e nell'anima .
However, the line-up problems continued: Riccardo Fogli decided to embark on a solo career and announced his exit. It was only after a long search that Red Canzian was accepted as the new bass player in the band. After more albums, Pooh separated from producer Lucariello and took production into his own hands. With Poohlover in 1976 another great success was achieved. This was followed by a major concert tour and various television appearances, until the band switched to the CGD label the following year with the album Rotolando respirando . Attempts to gain a foothold abroad also failed, whereupon the group continued to concentrate on the Italian market and was able to celebrate the next great successes with albums such as ... Stop (1980) or Buona fortuna (1981); from the latter, Chi fermerà la musica was released as a single, which became another number one hit. In 1986 Pooh celebrated its twentieth anniversary with the album Giorni infiniti and a major tour.
With the song Uomini soli , the band first appeared at the Sanremo Festival in 1990 and won. The song became another number one hit. In addition, the band was entitled to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 1990 in Zagreb , but they refused; the Sanremo runner-up Toto Cutugno , who moved up, eventually won the competition. The band's activity did not decline in the 1990s either, the 1996 album Amici per semper was particularly successful . To mark the 30th anniversary appeared in 1997 Mondadori with Quello che non sai the first official biography of the band; it was followed by the compilation The Best of Pooh . In 2002 the band contributed the music to a musical version of Pinocchio , directed by Saverio Marconi . For the soccer World Cup 2006 the band wrote the official anthem of the Italian national soccer team with Cuore azzurro . After Italy's World Cup victory, the song reached number two on the charts.
With the cover album Beat ReGeneration in 2008, the band remembered the beat music of their early days. When Stefano D'Orazio announced his departure in 2009, the compilation Ancora una notte insieme was published and concluded with a final tour. The three remaining band members continued their activity in 2010 and brought out - with Steve Ferrone as a temporary drummer - the album Dove comincia il sole . After extensive live activity, an album was released in 2012 with Opera seconda (on drums: Phil Mer) in which the band presented their own classics with new arrangements. In 2013 Pooh promised to take a break for several years with the publication of the Poohbox collection (CDs, DVDs and books). In honor of their founder Valerio Negrini, who died in 2013, the band performed once in 2014 with Riccardo Fogli and Stefano D'Orazio as well as many other companions.
On September 28, 2015, the band announced a reunion with Fogli and D'Orazio. After a series of concerts to mark its 50th anniversary, Pooh is set to be finally dissolved at the end of 2016. She made her first appearance as a star guest at the Sanremo Festival 2016 .
