Alfred Jesse Smith (born July 26, 1941 in Shreveport , Louisiana ), known by his stage name Brenton Wood , is an American R&B and soul singer and songwriter . His best known hits are The Oogum Boogum Song and Gimme Little Sign from 1967.

biography

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Smith grew up in San Pedro, Los Angeles . After graduating from high school in Compton, California , he studied at East Los Angeles College, where he turned to music and took the stage name Brenton Wood. His role models were in particular Jesse Belvin and Sam Cooke .

After the first unsuccessful singles, The Oogum Boogum Song made it to number 19 on the Billboard Hot R&B and number 34 on the Hot 100 charts in 1967 . The single Gimme Little Sign even reached number 19 in the R&B and number 9 in the pop charts in the same year. With Baby You Got It , another hit followed at position 34 on the Hot 100 at the end of 1967.

In 1972 Wood started his own music label . In 1972 he published the soul classic Sticky Boom Boom To Cold Part I and II , of which he was co-author and co-producer. In 1977 he had another success with Come Softly to Me , number 92 in the R&B charts. Since then there have been a few albums and compilations by Brenton Wood.

Brenton Woods hits have been used frequently in cinema and television productions and have been covered several times, for example Gimme Little Sign by Ricky Nelson (1977) and Danielle Brisebois (1994).
