Dik Dik is an Italian beat band from Milan that was founded in 1965.

Band history

At the end of the 1950s, classmates Pietro Montalbetti, Erminio Salvaderi and Giancarlo Sbriziolo founded the rock 'n' roll group Dreamers. In 1962 the musicians Sergio Panno and Mario Totaro joined and the group was renamed Squali (" sharks "). It was not until 1965, with the first record deal with the Ricordi label and at the height of the beat wave in Italy, that the final name Dik Dik (after the Dikdiks , a genus of dwarf antelopes) was decided. The group's debut single was 1-2-3 (cover of a song by Len Barry ), the breakthrough came in 1966 with the next single Sognando la California (cover of California Dreamin ' by The Mamas and the Papas ).

1967 coverte Dik Dik with Senza luce the hit A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum and reached the top of the Italian singles chart. In addition to such cover versions of international successes, the group also works with the songwriter duo from Mogol and Lucio Battisti , for example in 1967 in the single Il vento . At the Sanremo Festival in 1969 , the group presented the song Zucchero together with Rita Pavone and reached 13th place in the final. With the following single Il primo giorno di primavera Dik Dik achieved another hit. This was followed by two further Sanremo appearances ( 1970 with Io mi fermo qui and 1971 with Ninna nanna ) and a few smaller hits, including the Wight-Is-Wight cover L'isola di Wight (1970) and Vendo casa by Battisti / Mogol .

With Viaggio di un poeta , the group had another number one hit in 1972. In that year Dik Dik also released the album Suite per una donna assolutamente relativa , an unusual excursion into progressive rock for her ; however, it was largely ignored. After a few other releases (including the single Help Me , inspired by David Bowie's Space Oddity ) the group split from the Ricordi label and in 1974 Sergio Panno and Mario Totaro left the band. The last chart success came in 1976 with the single Volando (the album of the same name was released on the Ri-Fi label), and in 1978 founding member Giancarlo Sbriziolo temporarily dropped out. In the course of several line-up changes, the group's sound became harder.

In the years that followed, the band released various albums with changing labels and appeared in the original three-man line-up consisting of Montalbetti, Salvaderi and Sbriziolo, especially in the context of 1960s revivals . In 1985 she took part in the benefit project MusicaItalia per l'Etiopia . Together with Maurizio Vandelli ( Equipe 84 ) and the Camaleonti , Dik Dik competed again at the Sanremo Festival in 1993 with Come passa il tempo . The song did not make it to the final, but then reached the single charts. In 2000, the group collected beat classics from the 1960s in the album Sogno Beat .
