I Giganti (Italian for "The Giants") is an Italian beat band that was founded in 1964.
Band history
The Giganti were founded in 1964 at the height of the Italian beat wave by the drummer Enrico Maria Papes together with the brothers Mino and Sergio Di Martino (guitar and bass), in 1965 the keyboardist Checco Marsella completed the lineup. After first publications, they were able to attract attention for the first time in 1966 with the single Una ragazza in due . In the same year the band took part in the summer hit competition Un disco per l'estate , where they achieved third place with the song Tema . The single reached the top of the Italian single charts and finally helped the group to break through. The debut album was also a success.
At the Sanremo Festival in 1967 , the band presented the song Proposta together with The Bachelors and landed in third place. This song also became a number one hit. The scandalous Io e il presidente reached third place at the Cantagiro in 1967, but was not a chart success . In 1968 the Giganti returned to Sanremo, this time together with Massimo Ranieri , and landed in fifth place with Da bambino . In the same year, the group surprisingly announced its breakup. In 1969, however, her second album Mille idee dei Giganti was released .
In 1970 the band resumed their activities for a short time, took part in the Cantagiro in 1970 and the Sanremo Festival in 1971 and in 1971 released the progressive rock- oriented concept album Terra in bocca (about the mafia ). After another brief attempt at reunion, Mino Di Martino pursued other projects (including working with Franco Battiato ). Sergio Di Martino died in 1996. Two years later, Papes and Marsella reunited, with Kambiz Kaboli as the new bass player and Giovanni De Luigi as lead singer. Since then the line-up has changed again, from the founders only Papes remained in the band.
