Gerardo Broggini

Gerardo Broggini (born November 16, 1926 in Locarno ; † October 29, 2018 in Sagno ) was a Swiss lawyer and Romance scholar. He was professor of Roman law and private law at the Universities of Freiburg (Switzerland) and Heidelberg and at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan . From 1968 he was also a lawyer in Milan.

Life

Broggini studied law and completed his habilitation in 1956 at the University of Heidelberg with a thesis on Roman law. From 1956 to 1961 he was full professor at the University of Freiburg (Switzerland) and from 1961 to 1968 at the University of Heidelberg for Roman law, comparative private law and private international law . One of his assistants in Heidelberg was the Romance scholar Walter Selb .

1964 founded Broggini with the then President of the German Federal Bruno Heusinger the Association for the exchange of ideas between German and Italian lawyers eV , since the Bochum conference on 15/16. From 1968 to 1990 he taught Roman law at the Catholic University of Milan and private international law until November 1999. Until June 2002 he lectured on arbitration .

Broggini was, among many other awards, the holder of the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art : Foreign member of the Curia for Science.

In 1997 the commemorative publication "Collisio Legum" was dedicated to him.

Due to his legal knowledge of German, French, Italian and Austrian law, he is considered one of the pioneers of European legal integration.
