Vacallo is a municipality in the Caneggio district in the Mendrisio district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland on the border with Italy.

history

Vacallo was first mentioned in 1202. It initially belonged to the municipality of Balerna , but split off in 1573 with the establishment of its own parish. The chapel or church of Santi Simone e Giuda Taddeo (Apostles Simon Zelotes and Jude Thaddäus ) is mentioned in this context . The baroque church of the Holy Cross was only built around an existing chapel in the 17th century.

Vacallo has always been characterized by agriculture. The wine-growing , in Switzerland Rebbau called the cultivation of tobacco and the use of mulberry trees played an important role, which is reflected in the coat of arms. The blazon shows three vines and the initial V for Vacallo, which symbolize the three places Pizzamiglio, Roggiana and San Simon. In earlier times the masonry and plaster handicraft were of great importance. Many young, sought-after craftsmen from Vacallo emigrated to work in other cantons. In 1850 Vacallo had 550 inhabitants, in 1950 there were 1434 and now there are over 3000 inhabitants. Today Vacallo is a pure place of residence in the agglomeration in the greater Chiasso area .

On November 25, 2007, a merger project in the municipalities of Chiasso , Morbio Inferiore and Vacallo failed .

geography

Vacallo is located in the east of the Mendrisiotto north of Chiasso, on the north bank of the Breggia river , at the foot of Monte Bisbino .
