The Pürckhauer (including soil sampler , Erdbohrstock , ground Hauer ) is a patented gouge drill in soil science and geomorphology comes investigations in off-road operation. The drill stick is used to take soil samples from the surface near the surface, with which the soil types and the nutrient content can be determined. The name derives from its developer Dr. Exit Pürckhauer. Impact lengths of 1 or 1.5 m are common. When drilling up to 2 meters deep, two drill rods of different lengths are used and driven one after the other into the same hole. For even deeper bores, ram core probes are used.

application

Soil analysis is used in this form in agriculture (for example for analyzing fertilizer requirements according to the Protected Areas and Compensation Ordinance in Baden-Württemberg ). In addition, the boring stick is used as a robust and simple research tool in the educational sector at schools and other educational institutions for teaching soil growth conditions in biology or in local history. From around the age of eight, pupils are physically able to independently drive a one meter deep drill rod into soft soil layers and then lever it out again.

Investigation procedure

Pürckhauer with a soil sample from a floodplain

The Pürckhauer consists of a hollow core drill with a hammer head at the upper end, made of different types of steel or alloys depending on the quality, which is opened like a slot at the beveled, pointed lower end and on the long side and is hollowed out like a sleeve. The boring stick is driven into the ground with a mallet and the soil sample is pressed into the semi-open rod in a cylindrical shape. In order to detach the soil sample inside the rod from the surrounding soil, the rod is turned several times with a handle that is passed through a hole in the impact head. Then the stick is pulled out at the head opening with the help of a lever pulling iron by placing the rod on a lever piece and levering it out on the hammer as an abutment. A similar construction is a special pulling device to achieve leverage. When using a conical drill rod (which tapers slightly towards the bottom), leverage can be eliminated by simply pulling it out by hand.

The soil sample, pressed by the impact pressure, remains in the hollowed-out joint of the shaft and can be examined. Several samples at defined intervals demonstrate the varying layer thicknesses, sometimes within a few meters. The soil components can be determined from the discoloration and consistency of the samples. As a further aid, color and material tables can be used for comparison.
