Piergiorgio Noseda (born July 14, 1938 in Mendrisio , Ticino ) is a Swiss physician and university professor .

biography

Noseda studied medicine at the University of Zurich and in Paris. He deepened himself through postgraduate studies at the University of Zurich, London and Bern.

He worked as a senior physician in internal medicine at the Inselspital Bern , from 1974 to 2001 as chief physician in internal medicine at the Mendrisio regional hospital and from 2002 to 2005 as a cardiologist at the Ospedale Civico in Lugano . Noseda also taught at the University of Bern .

In addition to his work as a doctor, he devoted himself to the fight against cancer . Since 1984 he has been a member of the board of trustees for the Fondazione ticinese per la ricerca sul cancro . From 1989 to 1992 he was President of the Swiss Cancer League , from 1990 to 2006 President of the Swiss Cancer Research Foundation , of which he was a co-founder, from 1997 to 1999 President of the Swiss Institute for Applied Cancer Research and from 2001 to 2011 the Swiss Bridge Foundation , which is also the Supports cancer research. In 1993 he was co-founder and for a long time President of the House of the Swiss Cancer League Foundation . In 1999 he founded the Oncosuisse association , the umbrella association for cancer organizations in Switzerland, which he chaired until 2006 and which implemented the National Strategy against Cancer. In 2007 he was co-founder and subsequently President of the Foundation National Institute for Cancer Epidemiology and Registration (NICER) , which coordinates the national cancer registration , which has been carried out throughout Switzerland since 2020.

He was also active in specialist cardiological organizations, including on the board of the Swiss Heart Foundation and as secretary of the European Atherosclerosis Society . In 1997 he was involved in founding the Istituto di Ricerca in Biomedicina in Belinzona, of which he is still honorary president.

From 1975 to 1989 Noseda was a Social Democrat member of the Grand Council (Gran Consiglio) of the Canton of Ticino.

Private

Giorgio Noseda is married to Lorenza Pedrolini. The two have three children.

Noseda is also socially committed and is the founder and honorary president of aid organizations that support development in Casamance in Senegal and the education of the disadvantaged in Kenya .

Award

Noseda has received numerous awards. Among other things, he was named Swiss of the Year in the Society category in 2006. The University of Zurich made him an Honorary Senator in 2020 . A chair for cancer epidemiology and care at the University of Zurich was named after him in 2020 .
