The Uetliberg tunnel is a section of the A3 motorway south of Zurich in Switzerland and has been connecting the Zurich-West motorway junctions near Birmensdorf and Zurich-South in Wollishofen in a direct line since May 4, 2009 . The two tubes cross the Uetliberg , Zurich's local mountain . The tunnel is intended above all the previous Westtangente and the Birmensdorferstrasse from heavy through traffic relief and closes an important gap in the Swiss road network.

Construction

During the construction of the Uetliberg Tunnel, various excavation methods were used to drill through the highly differentiating rock, such as traditional blasting , but also driving using a tunnel boring machine (TBM), a tunnel boring widening machine (TBE) using undercut technology, dome jacking and in the Reppischtal area in opencast mining. The excavated volume was 1.7 million m³.

The tunnel consists of two separate tubes in an east-west direction. Each tube has two lanes and a hard shoulder. Cross connections every 300 m serve as escape routes into the other tube, which is why there was no need for a safety tunnel. In addition to the usual carriageway crossings at the tunnel portals, the two tubes are connected to each other in both directions by means of a transfer tunnel under the Reppischtal ventilation center so that traffic can be directed into the other tube in the event of a fire or construction site. The tubes have a gradient of 1.6% towards the east.

Accompanying traffic measures

For the opening of the Uetliberg tunnel, the city of Zurich implemented a number of accompanying measures, which were primarily intended to effectively relieve Zurich city districts 3 and 4 of through traffic. By the summer of 2010, for example, Sihlfeldstrasse and Weststrasse had been converted back into neighborhood streets by means of structural measures, thereby relieving 90% of traffic.
