The Höckler is the southernmost area of the Zürcher Allmend in the Leimbach area .

location

The Höckler is hilly terrain on the left bank of the Sihl in District 2 between Leimbach and the Allmend Brunau. The slopes pull up to the Uetliberg . In the north is the east portal of the Uetliberg tunnel .

history

The field name Höckler was first mentioned in a document in 1448. The name Höckler probably comes from a former seat or inn along the Medikerweg, which leads to the Medikon estate on the Albis. The Swiss German word squat or Hoeckle is used in the vernacular meaning for a cozy get-together today.

The Höckler estate used to stand in the area. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the von Manesse family and later to the Selnau monastery . After its abolition, the Höckler became the property of the Zurich Hospital. At the beginning of the 19th century, the private man Meier bought it including the restaurant, which was a popular destination at the time. At that time the Allmend was about an hour's walk outside the city of Zurich and could only be reached by ferry across the Sihl at the height of today's Sihlcity . A wooden bridge was only built later. The excursion was often combined with a walk to the ruins of the nearby Manegg Castle .

The Höcklergut comprised an extensive garden with a goldfish pond and a viewing terrace on the edge of the forest with a striking copper beech . In 1873 the city bought the Höcklergut. In the course of the increased use of the area as a shooting range, the property was demolished. After moving into the barracks Zurich Reppischtal the Höckler in 1987 was as a military base abandoned. However, large parts of the Höckler are still heavily contaminated with heavy metals and blocked off.

The tradition of the old orchard of the former Höckler estate is followed by the replanting campaign for rare standard varieties by Grün Stadt Zürich . In March 2006 school children planted the first 60 apple trees and thus contributed to the rejuvenation of the orchard, which is over 200 years old.

Nature school, timber construction from 2006

The Allmend nature school has existed on the Höckler since 1995, imparting nature experiences and familiarity with nature. In spring 2006 it received a new building.
