etymology

The pictogram woman shows her in the submissive posture that was typical of Chinese women: hands clasped in front of the body in the sleeves, the back bent, the head bowed. Later the character shows the woman in profile, on her knees.

Compositions

As a bearer of meaning in the compound symbol, 女 places them in the meaning field “woman, female” such as 妇 (fu = woman), 姑 (gu = aunt), as 姑娘 (guniang = girl), 娥 (e = beautiful young woman),婆 (po = old woman). Many signs with the radical 女 have obviously been constructed from a misogyn-sexist point of view, such as 奸 (= sneaky, rape). Further examples of such negative meaning fields of the radical 女 are 妄 (= absurd) and 嫖 (= visit to a brothel).

The character 姓 (= family name) is also assigned to the radical woman. In this context, the scholar Wang Yinglin from the Song Dynasty pointed out that the name for family name was originally separated by gender. 姓 stood for the woman's family name. 氏 for the men's family name. So it happens that some family names still contain the radical woman, such as 姬, 姜, 姚.
