Radical 106 , meaning “ white ”, is one of 23 of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese writing that are written with five strokes.
With 22 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are relatively few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.
The radical white takes only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals, the 106th position. In modern abbreviation dictionaries it can be found in a completely different place. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 150th position.
The character is seen as a derivative of radical 72 (日 = sun). What the seal character depicts is still unclear to this day.
白 (bai) appears as a bearer of meaning in signs that have to do with brightness: 皎 (jiao = clear), 皑 (ji = pure white), 皓 (hao = shining), 皙 (= white skin), 皤 (= White). 皖 (Wan, short for Anhui Province ) 安徽 originally meant star. 的 (de), a very often used attribute -particle, originally also meant bright, which is why 白 (bai) also functions here as a bearer of meaning.
In many characters, however, 白 (bai) occurs as a sound carrier such as 柏 (bai = cypress, but pronounced bo in the city name Berlin: 柏林 Bolin), 伯 (bai = brother-in-law), 拍 (pai = clapping), 迫 (pai = Mortar, also pronounced po, then: force), 帕 (= handkerchief), 怕 (po = fear), 铂 (bo = element platinum ), 泊 (= anchor), 舶 (= large ship) and 帛 (= silk fabrics ).
The lower component of 百 (bai = one hundred) arose from 自 (= self), not from 白 (bai). The upper right part of 貌 (mo = look, appear) also has nothing to do with 白 (bai).
