A very rare spelling variant is 夨.

The seal mark shows a person standing upright. Xu Shen , the inventor of the radical system, explained 大 in his work Shuowen jiezi as follows:

"The sky is big, the earth is big, so is man, and therefore 大 looks great as a person."

When 大 functions as a bearer of meaning in compound signs, it often creates a connection with people or with size. The sky 天 is represented with a line above the person 大.
