---|---|
算卦 | fortune telling |
占卜 | Fortune telling |
八卦 | eight oracle signs |
The eight trigrams (八卦 bāguà = eight oracle signs) are symbols used for prophecy and form the basis of the ancient Chinese I Ching (易經 Yíjīng = book of changes ). They consist of three either solid (yáng) or broken (yīn) lines, resulting in 2 3 = 8 possibilities, which are often represented in the form of a circle. Two trigrams result in one of the 2 6 = 64 hexagrams. The meaning of each hexagram is described in the Book of Changes.
The symbol 卜 also functions as a sound carrier such as in
- 补 (= repair) or
- 卟 吩 (= porphine ).
In some other characters, however, such as with the family name 卢 or with 卡 (= to stop), 卜 only has the function of a general, distinguishing component.
The symbol compound 卤 is also used as an abbreviation for radical 197鹵.
