The radical 20 meaning " embrace " is one of the 23 traditional radicals of Chinese characters that are written with two strokes.

With 16 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , it is relatively rare in dictionaries.

In the oldest form of this radical, one recognizes a person leaning forward and embracing something. Today it is not a separate character and only occurs in combination with other characters. The sign is similar to the katakana sign "ku" and the zhuyin sign ㄅ [b̥].

The symbol Zeichen has three functions:

  1. As a radical for characters that are associated with rounded body parts or packaging, such as 胸 (= chest) or 包 (= wrap up).
  2. As a meaning and sound carrier in 包 (= packing) or 胞 (= amniotic sac).
  3. As a general component without meaning in characters such as 句 (= sentence) and 勿 (= not).

In addition, 勹 is a sound carrier in the characters 包 (= wrap up) and 跑 (= run).
