Radical 117 with the meaning "stand" or "stand up" is one of 23 of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese writing , which are written with five strokes.

With 16 combinations of characters in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , there are few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.

The radical only occupies the 117th position in the long - character list of traditional radicals , which consists of 214 radicals. In modern shorthand dictionaries it can be found in a completely different place. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 126th position.

The oracle bone and bronze script form of this character show a large (大) person standing firmly on a surface (一).

As a bearer of meaning in the compound sign, 立 creates the meaning field , such as in:

竖 (= vertical) and
竣 (= finish).

The latter initially had the meaning of standing up (after finishing an activity).

The sign 并 (= simultaneously) originally showed two 立 next to each other (立 立). From this today's 并 with the radical 51干 developed.

The upper component of the characters 竟 (= complete), 章 (zhang = chapter), 意 (yi = meaning) always consists of the radical 180音 (yin = sound). The characters 童 (tong = child) and 妾 (qi = concubine) originally had a component similar to 辛 (= biting, radical 160 ) without the lower horizontal line. Men who fell into slavery used to be called 童. This symbol was made up of 辛 (without a lower horizontal line) plus 重 as a sound carrier. The concubine 妾 was the combination 辛 (without lower horizontal bar) plus woman (女).

竞 (in 竞争 = competition) is shortened from ürzt. In the original form, the upper part was not a 立, but radical 149言 (= word). The component below is the 口 (= mouth) and below was the person (儿). Twice 言 next to each other (as in 竞) meant two to speak , from which today's symbol 竞 (= competition) gets its meaning.

立 acts as a sound carrier in the following characters:

粒 (= grain),
笠 (= wide rain hat made of bamboo grass),
垃 (= garbage) and
拉 (= pull).
