Heinz Schaden (born April 29, 1954 in Graz ) is a former Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) who was sentenced to imprisonment for infidelity. From 1999 to 2017 he was mayor of the city of Salzburg .

Life

Heinz Schaden was born in Graz on April 29, 1954. He studied political science , journalism and economic history in Salzburg and received his doctorate in philosophy from Paris-Lodron University in 1981 . He then studied in Vienna until 1985 - including at the Diplomatic Academy Vienna - and graduated with a diploma. He then worked in the Ministry of Construction until 1987 and was active in politics. After leaving politics in 2017, Schaden will become a consultant for crane manufacturer Palfinger in China.

Schaden is married to his second marriage and has an adult daughter from his first marriage.

Schaden was Vice Mayor of the City of Salzburg as early as 1992, before becoming the first directly elected mayor of Salzburg on April 30, 1999. He was able to prevail in the runoff election in the second ballot . In the mayoral election on March 7, 2004, he was confirmed in office with 51.96% in the first ballot. In the subsequent election on March 1, 2009, he suffered significant losses as the SPÖ top candidate in the municipal council election (35.79% instead of 43.78% in 2004) and missed the election of mayor in the first round with 45.37% of the votes . In the runoff election, however, he was just able to prevail against his opponent Harald Preuner ( ÖVP ) with 53.71% .

In addition to his position as mayor, he was also chairman of the SPÖ in the city of Salzburg and a member of the federal party executive. On October 18, 2013, he resigned from all party offices and justified this with "some serious content-related problems" with the line of the SPÖ.

On July 31, 2017, he announced his resignation as mayor on September 20, 2017. The official business was initially taken over on an interim basis by the then Deputy Mayor Harald Preuner ( ÖVP ), who won the mayor's runoff election on December 10, 2017 and was elected as the new mayor. Preuner was able to prevail against the SPÖ candidate Bernhard Auinger .

Swap process

In the so-called swap process , Schaden, the former Finance Minister Othmar Raus and other defendants were accused of having the State of Salzburg take over six negatively rated swap transactions for no consideration from the City of Salzburg in 2007, whereby the state suffered damage of 4, 8 million euros arose. Despite denying his guilt, on July 28, 2017, Schaden was sentenced to three years imprisonment for infidelity, one of which was unconditional. The verdict was initially not final as both the convict and the public prosecutor's office appealed. On May 14, 2019, it became known that the General Procuratorate recommended that the judgments be confirmed. On October 2, 2019, the Supreme Court decided in public hearing on the annulment complaints and the appeals of the defendants as well as on the appeal of the public prosecutor. He confirmed the guilty verdict of the earlier instances and thus legally sentenced Damage to three years imprisonment, one year of which is unconditional. He should lose his politician's pension. However, it later became known that due to an amendment to the law, he was now receiving a politician's pension.

Since August 19, 2002 Schaden has been awarded the Portuguese Order of Merit . This was awarded to him in the form of the Grand Cross. In 2014 he was awarded the Great Medal of Honor of the State of Salzburg .

Heinz Schaden was one of the passengers on the Costa Concordia when it crashed on January 13, 2012 off the island of Giglio.
