In the rotunda, which was modernized in 2000, is the circular painting which Edouard Castres from 1881. It is 112 meters long and 10 meters high and shows the French Eastern Army of General Charles Denis Sauter Bourbaki during their transfer to the Switzerland at the end of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 . In front of the painting there is a three-dimensional area that brings out the whole scene in a three-dimensional effect. The viewer is supposed to experience how part of the 87,000-strong Eastern Army crosses the border at Les Verrières , is disarmed and cared for by the civilian population.
Aftermath
Up until the beginning of the 20th century, the Bourbaki Panorama was a hit with the public. The memory of the Bourbaki internment became a narrative and part of the collective memory . The Bourbaki panorama played an important role in the creation of the myth of Switzerland's humanitarian tradition .
The impressive depiction of the defeated Bourbaki army may have contributed significantly to the fact that the term Bourbaki in the military language of the Swiss militia army is still a synonym for disorder, disorganization, etc. The term is used particularly often to reprimand non-compliant wearing of the uniform.
