Giovanni II. Cornaro
Giovanni Corner , also called Giovanni Cornaro (* August 4, 1647 in Venice ; † August 12, 1722 there ) was the fourth and last Doge of Venice , who came from the Cornaro family . He was the 111th Doge of Venice .
Corner was the eldest of two sons of Federico Corner and Cornelia Contarini and brother of Cardinal Giorgio. He was also the grandson of Francesco Cornaro . His marriage to Laura Corner, a distant relative of an equally rich branch of the family, had four sons. Giovanni Corner's descendants died out with his great-grandson Piero Francesco in the male line. After holding various political offices - e. B. 1683 Senator , 1691 Governor of Brescia , Giovanni Cornaro was elected Doge of Venice in 1709. He was seen as inconspicuous and politically not very ambitious, which is why an agreement was reached on him as a compromise solution in a dispute between the Diedo and Pisani families .
During his tenure, the loss of Morea (the medieval name of the Peloponnese ) fell to the Turks .
The Doge's tomb is in the Cornaro family chapel in San Nicola da Tolentino .
